소니 워크맨의 죽음, Death of the cassette Walkman

(That is our first Walkman.)

Now it’s nearly forgotten.
In the past 30 years, Sony has sold more than 200 million Walkman.

Twenty years ago, yes, yes. And I did use a Walkman and it was good.
But now, it’s pulling the plug.

It’s… there’s no use for them anymore, except in, maybe in the museums.
I used to have one when they were in fashion, but I don’t have one anymore.
Just go and buy MP3s and downloading and iPods.

Sony stopped producing the Walkman in Japan, the last batch was made in April.
The times: they are a-changin’.

Sony revolutionized the electronics industry with the Walkman in 1979.
It was the first ever portable music device.
As cassette tapes gave way to CDs, Sony followed up with the Discman.

But when Apple burst into the market with its first iPod back in 2001, there was no turning back.
In the nine years since, Apple has sold about 275 million iPods,making it the undisputed leader in portable music.

Sony says there’s still some demand for the classic Walkman in parts of Asia and the Middle East.
To accommodate those customers, it will produce a limited number of Walkman out of China.

But many music lovers went digital a long time ago
and say they won’t even notice the Walkman is gone.

Walkmans with cassettes, right? No, I don’t even have any cassettes anymore.

Like primped hair and Pac Man, a classic of 1980s culture,

now banished to the history books and the memories of nostalgic fans.

소니는 4월에 제작된 상품을 마지막으로 일본 내 워크맨 생산을 중단했습니다.
세월이 참 많이 변했습니다.
소니는 1979년 워크맨을 출시하면서 전자산업계에 일대 혁명을 일으켰습니다.
워크맨은 최초의 휴대용 음향기기였습니다.
카세트 테이프가 CD에 자리를 내주자, 소니는 디스크맨을 출시했습니다.

그러나 애플이 2001년 아이팟 출시와 함께 시장에 진출하면서 판세를 되돌리는 것이 불가능해졌습니다.
그 후 9년간 애플이 판매한 아이팟은 약 2억7천500만 개로,
애플은 명실공히 휴대용 음향기기 시장의 선두주자로 떠올랐습니다.
소니는 그래도 아직 아시아 일부 지역과 중동 지역에서 구식 워크맨에 대한 수요가 있다고 말합니다.
이 같은 소비자들의 수요에 부응하기 위해 중국에서 한정 수량의 워크맨을 생산할 예정이라고 합니다.
하지만 음악을 즐기는 많은 소비자들이 이미 오래 전 디지털 제품으로 전향했고,
워크맨이 사라진다는 것을 알아채지도 못할 것이라고 말합니다.

워크맨이면 카세트를 듣는 것 말씀하시는 거죠? 아뇨. 저한테는 이제 카세트도 없는걸요.

한껏 부풀린 헤어스타일과 팩맨처럼, 80년대 고전 문화를 대표하던 워크맨도
이제는 역사의 한 켠으로 사라져, 옛 추억을 떠올리는 이들의 기억 속에 남게 되었습니다.
