배달의민족 창업자 김봉진 ‘우아한 형제들’ 의장이 재산 절반을 사회에 환원하겠다는 김봉진 재산 기부 선언문을 발표했습니다.

이 선언문은 전 세계 대부호들이 사후나 사전에 재산 대부분 또는 일부를 사회에 환원하겠다는 약속하는 운동을 펼치고 있는 더기빙플레지 The Giving Pledge를 통해서 발표되었습니다.

• 우리나라 스타트업 창업자들이 점점 더 재산 사회 환원에 대해 관심을 보이고 있습니다.
• 재산 기부라서인지 부부가 같이 이름을 올렸습니다. 이는 빌 게이츠도 만찬가지로 대부분 재산 기부 선언을 하는 사람들은 부부 이름으로 재산을 기부하고 관련 재단 등을 부부 이름 모두를 사용하고 있습니다.
• 빌 게이츠나 워런 버핏과 같은 먼저 재산 기부를 실천한 것이 후배 기업가들의 모범이 되었습니다.

안녕하세요 김봉진, 설보미입니다.

우선 빌게이츠와 워런버핏 그리고 앞선 218분의 기부선언자분들께 깊은 존경과 감사의 인사를 드립니다.
여러분들은 저와 같은 수많은 창업자들에게 깊은 영감을 주었으며 이보다 더 많은 사람들에게 희망의 메시지를 전달하였습니다. 이 이야기는 누군가에 의해 계속 이어져야 하며 그 이야기를 잇는 사람 중 한 명이 된 것에 대해 영광스럽게 생각합니다.

저와 저의 아내 설보미는 죽기 전까지 재산의 절반 이상을 사회에 환원하는 것을 선언합니다.
우리의 사랑스러운 자녀들 한나, 주아도 이 결정에 동의했음을 알려드립니다. (심지어 위 사진은 한나가 찍어준 사진입니다. 그리고 셋째 다니엘은 아직 두 살이라 설명이 불가능해 훗날 자라면 누나들과 잘 설득해 보겠습니다. 🙂 )

이 기부선언문은 우리의 자식들에게 주는 그 어떤 것들보다도 최고의 유산이 될 것임을 확신합니다.

기부서약은 제가 쌓은 부가 단지 개인의 능력과 노력을 넘어선 신의 축복과 사회적 운에 그리고 수많은 분들의 도움에 의한 것임을 공개적으로 고백하는 것이라고 생각합니다.
대한민국에서 아주 작은 섬에서 태어나 고등학교 때는 손님들이 쓰던 식당 방에서 잠을 잘 정도로 넉넉하지 못했던 가정형편에 어렵게 예술대학을 나온 제가 이만큼 이룬 것은 신의 축복과 운이 좋았다는 것으로 밖에는 설명하기가 어렵습니다.
존 롤스의 말처럼 ‘최소 수혜자 최우선 배려의 원칙’에 따라 그 부를 나눌 때 그 가치는 더욱 빛난다고 생각합니다.

2017년 페이스북을 통해 100억원을 3년 안에 환원하겠다는 기부 서약을 하고 그 약속을 지켰습니다. 이는 지금까지 우리 인생의 최고의 결정이었다고 생각하며 이제 더 큰 환원을 결정하려 합니다.
그 과정에서 인생의 행복과 보람을 경험했고, 심지어 이를 통해 사업을 더 잘 키워야겠다는 생각도 하게 되었으며, 기부 과정의 실무적인 어려움을 통해 여러 가지를 배우게 되었습니다.
그 배움을 통해 우리 부부는 앞으로 교육 불평등에 관한 문제 해결, 문화 예술에 대한 지원, 그리고 자선단체들이 더욱 그 일을 잘할 수 있도록 돕는 조직을 만드는 것을 차근차근 구상하고 있습니다.
또한 기부 문화를 저해하는 인식적, 제도적 문제들을 개선하는데도 작은 힘이지만 보태려합니다.

그렇지만 현재의 예상수명보다 훨씬 더 많이 살지도 모르는 세상에서 지금 모든 계획을 정하기는 어려울 것 같습니다. 과거에 문제가 되지 않았던 문제들이 지금은 큰 문제가 되고 있는 것을 보면 더더욱 그렇겠지요. 스타트업을 하면서 좌충우돌했던 것처럼 앞으로도 여러 방식의 기부와 사회문제 해결에 대한 도전과 실패를 통해 지속적으로 배워나갈 것이며, 그 경험을 많은 사람들과 나누고 기부문화를 확산하는 일을 꾸준히 해나가고 싶습니다.

마지막으로 10년 전 창업 초기 20명도 안되던 작은 회사를 운영할 때 빌게이츠와 워런버핏의 기사를 보면서 만약 성공한다면 더기빙플레지 선언을 하고 싶다는 생각을 막연하게 꿈꾸었는데요. 오늘 선언을 하게 된 것이 무척 감격스럽습니다.
제가 꾸었던 꿈이 세상을 변화시키고자 도전하는 수많은 창업자들의 꿈이 된다면 더없이 기쁠 것 같습니다.
그렇게 누군가 이 이야기를 계속 이어주시길 바랍니다.

We would like to express our deepest respect and gratitude to 218 signatories of the Giving Pledge, including Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett, who have walked this path before us. You have deeply inspired myriads of founders like us and delivered messages of hope to many more. It is crucial that this legacy be continued, and we are truly honored to be a part of this pledge, keeping the legacy alive.

My wife Bomi Sul and I hereby pledge that we will return more than half of our wealth to society during our lifetime. Our lovely children, Hanna and Jua have agreed with our decision. (In fact, Hanna has taken our picture for this pledge. Our youngest, Daniel is only two years old and too young to understand it now, so we will explain it to him again when he is older. 🙂 )

We are certain that this pledge is the greatest inheritance that we could provide for our children.

And this pledge for giving is a public confession that our fortune is a combination of God’s blessings, gifts of life, and support from many people that goes beyond one’s competence or hard work.

My humble beginning started on a small island in South Korea. During high school I had to wait until guests leave our family’s diner because there wasn’t a proper bedroom for me. I could barely afford the tuition to make my way through an art college. Having accomplished as much as I have in life can only be explained by good luck and God’s grace. As John Rawls put it, I think wealth is truly valuable when it is distributed for “the greatest benefit of the least advantaged members of society.”

In 2017, we posted our commitment on Facebook to give about 9 million U.S. dollars to philanthropy in 3 years, and we kept that promise. This has been the best decision of our lives so far, and we are now set to commit more. The process of giving made us feel rewarded and fulfilled, even gave us the motivation to grow our business further, It also taught us many things related to practical issues involved with giving. Through these learnings, we are envisioning how to resolve the issue of educational inequality, support arts and culture, and establish an organization that could help philanthropic institutions in carrying out their work. In addition, it is our humble wish to use our power, albeit small, to address perceptive and institutional obstacles that hinder the culture of giving.

As we live in a world where our life expectancy may turn out to be longer than what we anticipate now, it would be challenging for us to come up with a detailed plan for the future at this moment. This is especially true as things that were not problematic at all in the past are becoming serious issues. Just as we went through a lot of trouble in the beginning as a startup, we will continue to learn about various means of giving and solutions for social issues through trials and errors. We would love to keep sharing the experience with many people and expand the culture of philanthropy.

Ten years ago, when I was running a small company of less than twenty employees, I read an article about Bill Gates and Warren Buffett making the pledge and had a wild dream of one day making the pledge myself. It is very overwhelming that I am making such a pledge, today. I would be delighted beyond measure if the dream I once had could be the dream of many more founders who are trying to change the world.

And I hope that they will continue on with the legacy of giving.
