Flying somewhere between Beijing and Shanghai, we encountered a very active weatherfront with beautiful and very active thunderstorms. The cloud here seen on our left started to appear on our weather radar only a few minutes before and started to show off an amazing display of lightning that grew ever more intense. When we got closer, we saw that the cloud was going to burst through our flight path and we had to deviate up to 10km to avoid flying into this cell. Growing with a speed of up to 5000/6000ft per minute (1,5-2km per minute) straight up into the air, this was certainly a hazard to our airplane if we didnt fly around her.
The beauty of nightflights in Asia this time of the year.

The Milkyway clearly visible on a nightflight over cloudy India. Hundreds of billions of stars, and their light is already underway for sometimes more then hundred thousand years.. all the way to the sensor of my camera 🙂

A long exposure shot over the dark Sinai peninsula in Egypt. When the air is completely stable, sometimes its possible to make photos with extremely long exposures so the camera can catch every bit of light that’s out there. Far away cities, camp fires and settlements on the ground, but most of all the countless billions of stars that paint the sky high above.
At certain times in the year, we can look into the core of our own galaxy, which shows like a long band of ‘milky’ light, hence the name Milky Way. A huge concentration of so many stars and nebulae that all are spread out over distances our human brain can simply not comprehend.

A very heavy thunderstorm, cumulonimbus cloud, over the North Western part of the United States. If you look closely you can see how the air is being sucked up from all around the cloud all the way up the core of the cloud into the stratosphere.

At this time of the year many very powerful and intense clouds grow up from the heated and moist surface and grow into major storms that require airplanes to deviate for many miles off their route. At night a spectacular lightshow, not less impressive during the day.

This was, by far, one of the most amazing sunrises me and my (very experienced) colleague have ever seen; flying from Ho Chi Minh (Saigon, Vietnam) to Zhengzhou (China) last Friday October 14th and flying over Northern Vietnam.
Where we’d normally see a bright band of the the most magnificent colours and hues one could possibly imagine, this familiar show was now clearly interrupted by a series of dark lines; shadows of a huge cloud that must be hiding somewhere over the far edge of the Earths curvature.
Looking on the Significant Weather Chart of Asia and the Western Pacific area, we could only come to one simple conclusion; the extremely high and active Typhoon named ‘Sarika’, just South of Taipei, now hitting the Philippines as we speak, created these unique features.
The tops of the clouds were building up to 56.000ft, or equal to 16km above sea level. Those very clouds break the sun rays into the atmosphere and show the big lines of darkness that probe into the upper atmosphere like a show of shadow-puppets, played by the extreme forces of nature.
And on top of that; planet Venus showing her presence as if its nothing.
What a show…
